Consanguineous African Yoruba customs are manifest in carnival festivities in Leeds. Masquerading and costuming, taking on new personas akin to ancestor veneration by the Egungun “clan” keeping the ancestral trail alive. Elaborate colourful costumes are created sometimes synonymous with Yoruba deity signifiers. for example, the colour red is associated with Sango in the Yoruba pantheon.
